FIRST UK EDITION. 4to. 12 x 9.25 inches. Unpaginated. [140 pp.]. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, with gilt decorative blocks on front board. Extremities worn at base of spine, a little page edge staining and rear hinge starting to crack; otherwise a very good copu. Illustrated throughout by Arthur Rackham, Including colour frontispiece, title page and plates and by mumerous text figures. First UK publication of the Spencer Collection manuscript of A Midsummer Night's Dream, commissioned for the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library in 1929. The illustrations by Arthur Rackham are very different from his 1908 edition of the play. The text was written out by Grailly Hewitt (1864-1952), who played a key role in the twentieth century revival of calligraphy in Britain (see colophon and Riall, A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham).
